About DFI

The Diabetes Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in New Jersey and traces its origins to 1990. Originally known as NFD the Foundation for Diabetes, the Foundation defines its community as the state of New Jersey.

"Charity and personal force
are the only investments worth anything."
Walt Whitman

The Foundation offers programs and services to a population affected by a serious health problem. Diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body's ability to produce or properly use insulin, a hormone essential for life. Diabetes and its complications - which can include heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and stroke - are the third leading cause of death by disease in the United States.

Facts:

..... 20+ million Americans have diabetes; 1/3 of them don't know it!

..... Another 41 million have "pre-diabetes," a stage when diabetes can often still be prevented or at least delayed.

..... Diabetes costs about $132 billion a year of which $92 billion are direct medical costs; the rest are indirect costs such as loss of work productivity.
