Dr. Norman H.
Ertel has been a Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine
and Dentistry- New Jersey Medical School since 1971 when he was
also appointed as the first academic Chief of the Division of
Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and is one of the few
individuals to serve as Professor of Medicine at both the New
Jersey Medical School in Newark and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical
School in New Brunswick . He also served as Chief of Medicine
at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System at East Orange and Lyons
from 1971 until January of 2003 when he stepped down to pursue
his research and clinical interests.
He is an honors graduate of Harvard College and the Columbia
College of Physicians and Surgeons , both of which he attended
on full academic scholarships, and did his Internal Medicine
Residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Steroid
Biochemistry at the Columbia University College of Physicians
and Surgeons , and Endocrine Fellowship at the Cornell-New York
Hospital Medical Center.
He served as Chief of Endocrinology at Andrews Air Force Base
Hospital where he was the recipient of the Surgeon-General's
Award for describing the autoimmune etiology of Addison's Disease.
He is a founder and past President of both the Endocrine Society
of New Jersey and the American Diabetes Association-New Jersey
Affiliate. He received the Otto Brandman Research Award, its
highest honor, from the ADA-NJ Affiliate. He currently serves
on the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Chapter of AACE and
the Diabetes Foundation. He is also on the Executive Committee
of the State of Jersey's Diabetes Council.
He is the author of more than 200 published papers, book chapters
and abstracts and has received numerous research grants from
the NIH, the Veterans Administration and other agencies. Dr.
Ertel wrote the section on Adrenal Diseases in the 3rd Edition
of the Review Manual of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism,
published in June 2004 and is the co-Editor of the 4th Edition.
This monograph is distributed to all Endocrine Fellows completing
their training in the United States. He is the co-editor of a
new Textbook of Diabetes, released in the Fall of 2006. He has
presented more than 100 papers at national and international
scientific meetings and recently served as a Visiting Professor
of Endocrinology at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed
Army Medical Center, Georgetown University School of Medicine,
and the Washington Hospital Center.
