Camperships

Our Camp Campership Program sends dozens of needy children from the tri-state area to Camp Nejeda, a co-ed diabetes camp located in Stillwater, New Jersey on 72 acres with a 7-acre lake. The opportunity to spend time with peers, enjoy traditional camp activities and learn more about how to take care of their condition has an enormously positive impact on the life of insulin-dependent children. Established in 1958, Camp Nejeda is accredited by the American Camping Association and is fully approved by the New Jersey Department of Health. 325 children camp each year.

Facilities include camper cabins, swimming pool, health center, dining hall, recreation and meeting areas, a large building for all weather physical activities, arts and crafts building, diet and diabetic teaching areas and much more.

The objectives of Camp Nejeda are to provide:
..... an active and safe camping experience for children with diabetes;
..... an opportunity for children to live among their peers and establish
close relationships with others who have diabetes;
..... a unique opportunity for diabetes education management skills;
..... a lot of fun!

The camping program is designed to meet the individual needs of each camper. Programs range from areas of personal interest to those in which the children can increase their knowledge in certain types of skills. Diet and diabetic teaching are included in the overall program. Following the daily activities schedule, campers then participate in the fun and exciting evening programs. Weekend programs are designed around a theme which is maintained throughout the weekend. Counselors with specific skills and training facilitate the programs, encouraging campers to participate.

The Diabetes Foundation has subsidized the cost of sending children to Camp Nejeda since the early 1990s. The Diabetes Foundation also funds trail development and maintenance at the camp in memory of Todd Saslow who died at age 32 of diabetes and whose family created the Todd Saslow Campership Fund, in conjunction with the Diabetes Foundation.
