Dr. Charlotte
Sokol was educated at Brooklyn College, continuing her studies
at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, earning her medical
degree in 1957. She did a rotating internship from 1957 to 1958
at the Kings County Medical Center, University Division in Brooklyn
as well as her residency in internal medicine from July 1958
to June 1960. She completed her residency at Montefiore Hospital
in the Bronx from July 1960 to June 1961.
Dr. Sokol was Board certified in Internal Medicine in April 1964
and in Geriatrics in 1990. She was affiliated with Montefiore
Hospital from 1961 - 1966, Morrisania Hospital in the Bronx from
1961 - 1963 and Hackensack University Medical Center from 1963
to 2003 where she was Senior Attending Chief, Diabetes Center,
with a special interest in gestational diabetes. Dr. Sokol did
clinical work on new insulins for Eli Lilly and Hoechst Pharmaceuticals.
Her clinical practice attracted patients from throughout the
state and spanned 42 years.
Dr. Sokol is a member of the American Medical Association, the
Medical Society of New Jersey, the Bergen County Medical Society,
the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of
Clinical Endocrinologists, American Medical Woman's Association
and the American College of Physicians. She is currently active
with the Diabetes Foundation, the New Jersey Diabetes Council
and, most recently, has become active in the New Jersey Diabetes
Council and the Bergen County Volunteer Medical Initiative.
Dr. Sokol co-founded the Diabetes Foundation and we have benefited
from her wisdom, knowledge and common sense in our development
over the past two decades. She has often lectured at our public
education programs and is responsible for the creation and administration
of our indigent medical assistance program which will spend over
$150,000 this year to provide medication and supplies to our
neighbors in New Jersey who cannot afford their medications and
have no medical insurance.
